Dear Friends in Christ,
Well, here we are once again, the beginning of a new year. How can that be? Where has all the time gone? But here we are, none-the-less looking back on the year- glad some things are behind us and wishing some things would never end. It is a time of decisions, deciding what to hold onto and what to let go.
We can learn from the past. In the bible we are reminded of the consequences of unrepentant sin and in it we are reminded of God’s unfailing love and faithfulness to those who trust in Him.
But God’s word always points us forward- leading us- giving us hope and assurance of the future and fulfillment of His promises. But sometimes in the middle of the pain and confusion we encounter in life, even we who follow Jesus can feel lost at times, wondering where to go and what to do next.
There is a story in the gospel of John that is a “watershed” moment in the life and faith of the disciples. One day, as Jesus was teaching the crowds, some who had been following Jesus began to question what Jesus was saying and in their confusion left. At this point, Jesus turned to the twelve and asked them if they were considering leaving too. In response, Simon Peter looked Him in the eye and said: “Lord- to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life and we believed and we have come to know that you are the Holy One of God.”
His words are words of life to save- not only for eternity, but for each day. His words have power to transform hearts and lives. His words speak hope and peace and assurance. He is, after all, the Holy One of God.
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us full of grace and truth.” John 1:14 (not just on Christmas, but everyday). May the coming year bring each of us closer to Jesus by grace through faith.
God’s Peace to you – Dave
